a couple of lovebirds

to mark the imminent arrival of spring, here’s some indoor birdsong, recorded in a bradford pet supermarket.

these lovebirds seemed to get rather excited by the sight of my camera, and began to make some pretty impressive alarm calls—unlike the canaries, cockatiels, budgies and zebra finches, who’d obviously seen it all before.

anyway. i decided at this point to go record the fish [a much quieter option].

windy room, 5am

here’s a recording of a place i visit frequently: a hidden soundscape gem in the centre of leeds, the underground carpark of the entertainment & shopping centre known as the light.

there are dozens of air-vents (at least, that’s what i think they are) in the low ceiling, each emitting variations on this angelic sound. i wonder whether the architects consciously incorporated sound into the design of the building—and how many of the regular users of the carpark even notice the angels in the airvents.

i’ve made several recordings of this space over the past couple of years, but thought it was about time i did a binaural version. of course, a stereo recording will never be able to fully capture the immersive effect of such an installation, but maybe, listened to on headphones, this might go some way towards that.

keighley bus station

keighley bus station, 11.18am. some workmen are preparing to do some work. i’m not sure what it was they were fixing, but it involved making lots of sparks with a rotating blade.

here they are, shifting everything into place, ready to rattle everyones earwax.

doing a late shop at our local late shop, 9.45pm.

running the gauntlet of scary shopkeepers, who become very visibly annoyed if anyone dares to enter their shop 15 minutes before official closing time—10pm. this village has many quaint quirks.

i felt so intimidated i dropped my change on the floor.

for today’s entry, here’s four tracks, all taken from one long recording made while en route from frizinghall railway station to bradford interchange, via forster square station and bradford city centre. i found the journey so interesting i couldn’t bear to have just one short excerpt, so here’s the highlights. four for the price of one. so to speak.

bradford forster square station

the GNER trains which run between london kings cross and bradford forster square are very posh, almost silent and extremely long. and always virtually empty on the last leg of the journey, from leeds to bradford. luxury.

bradford piece hall yard

piece hall yard—the narrow street running from kirkgate down to the wool exchange. the lovely hushed acoustics were spiced up somewhat by someone’s unfortunate mishap.

bradford forster square station

passing st george’s hall [bradford’s concert hall], & noticing signs of life, i thought i’d go in and see what was happening. the entrance was full of shakin’ stevens fans, waiting for old shakey to finish his soundcheck. i hadn’t realised the great man was gracing our city with his presence. shakin’ stevens fans are a surprising bunch.

bradford interchange, top of escalator

bradford interchange.

people say the strangest things sometimes.

stationary train

sitting on a train in leeds station, waiting to set off, immersed in a symphony of crisp packets, rustling broadsheets and cute conversation.

nb—this one really does need headphones for full appreciation.
